Staying Current with Technology

Posted on: May 28th, 2015 by jiml | No Comments

“If you are running your business the same way you were a few years ago, you are not staying the same, you are falling behind.” The above is a saying we often repeat here at Colden Company. Rest assured your competition is not staying the same, so we encourage you to take a look at your operations and ask yourself if you are leading the competition or if you are staying stagnant. The future belongs to those who continually improve and advance.

Utilizing technology is a way your business can stay ahead, whether it be from the proper ERP system, perhaps a mobile solution to improve efficiency, or it could simply be having the right equipment (in house or in the cloud) that can run your operations efficiently. Old systems can be a silent drain on productivity. To prove the point, we recently completed an infrastructure overhaul for a customer and shortly after completion, our customer reported that employees were coming to them looking for more to do since the efficiencies gained from the upgrade allowed them to complete their normal day to day tasks more quickly.

User education is also an area where efficiencies can be gained and is often overlooked. Are your employees well trained on the systems you have in place? Often times application training can help make a person more productive at their job. On the technology side, blogs like this one can help keep you abreast of what is out there. Not every new technology is a good fit for every business. Knowing your options is important for every business.

Colden Company is also in the process of rolling out “Colden Company College”. Visit our media page at and see the links on the right side of the page. There you will find short videos that may help improve productivity at your place of business. Videos provide training on such things as Office 2013, Windows 8 and more. We will be including more topics over time.

Did one of your employees just get a new PC with Office 2013 on it? Have them watch a short video on the enhancements to make them more productive. Just get a Windows 8 PC? Watch a video to show you some of the features. These videos are free for you to use for your use and is another way in which Colden Company helps our customers to stay ahead of the competition. Also included is a short video on information security. We would advise all users to watch this video as a reminder of the dangers of the Internet as well as give them some tools to help combat those threats.

Education is something we are committed to here not only for ourselves with continued technical training for our staff, but also for our customers as well. Technology can be a great tool to stay ahead of the curve when implemented properly. That is why we are continually advancing our skills sets and the tools that we use. We are continually improving our services, especially those that use automation (think low or no cost to you), to help keep your networks running optimally. After all, we believe what say: “If you are running your business the same way you were a few years ago, you are not staying the same, you are falling behind”.

Tech Talk

How do you keep current with technology?  Staying current with technology is not easy with the busy schedules we keep today.  Do you have a trusted source of information? At Colden Company Inc., keeping current is our business.  We do not rely on one individual source for our information (and neither should you). No one person is an expert in all things technology.  There are simply too many areas of expertise in technology to know them all at an in-depth level. This is a problem that many businesses experience when they become reliant on a single voice, typically that of the IT person or designated IT person, for their technology information. If you have a single IT person or small IT staff, ask this question: “How is your IT staff staying current with all the technology changes that are out there?”.

Many businesses incorrectly think that they do not need an IT consulting firm because they have an in-house IT person. Some of our best customers are businesses that have IT professionals on staff.  We can augment the staff in areas that the on premise person either does not have the time or expertise to work on.

At Colden Company Inc., we have developed a variety of trusted web sites, bloggers and vendors to get our information. We have been providing trusted technology content since our inception.  Colden Company was founded in May of 2003 and we have never missed a monthly blog posting (or newsletter as it was known years ago).  Today we are still offering information through the blog but also via other mediums such as attending and presenting at conferences, continual technical training and education of our staff, lunch and learn events and now television.  We encourage you to check out and see our weekly technology segments aired by our partner LookTV (seen on Time Warner Cable). Each week we are discussing relevant technology topics to help keep viewers informed. Last weeks’ topic was mobile device management and this weeks’ topic will involve a look at the changing landscape of viruses and malware.

There should never be a single source for technology information, but please consider us at Colden Company, as one of your trusted sources for information. We want to hear from you. What technology topics are you interested in?  Reach out to us at, see us on FaceBook, or Twitter (@coldenco) and now watch us on LookTV!

Staying the Same is Falling Behind

Posted on: September 25th, 2013 by jiml | No Comments

When it comes to technology, if you are running your business the same way you were three or four years ago, you may think your position in the market is staying the same.  It is not.  Rest assured, your competition is implementing new technology to become more efficient and effective, which means your business is falling behind. The future belongs to those who grab it, not those who are content to rest on their previous successes.

Rapid changes in technologies are occurring every day.  Some will have practical applications to your business and others will not.  For example, recently two business owners approached Colden Company with questions on implementing iPads into their business.  The first told us their IT guy requested an iPad saying it would help him manage the infrastructure more efficiently. Our response was that the benefits were unclear at best. A second customer wanted their sales people to use the iPad to show their product at customer locations in a clear, portable format.  This is an excellent use for the iPad and we helped this customer implement the solution.  The technology is the same in both examples, but a much better fit for one business over the other.  It is important that new technology not be adopted blindly, but rather through a well-thought-out business plan. Technology is a means to an end, not a solution on its own.

At Colden Company Inc, we are technology integration specialists.  This is what we do every day.  Our expertise allows you to concentrate on running your business, while partnering with a best-in-breed technology vendor.  “Partner” is the key word here.  Is your technology vendor aware of your business plans? If not, how can they advise on which technologies can help and which will not? Do you use your IT provider only to fix problems when they arise or are you fully leveraging their skill set and bringing that technology advantage to your business?  If you are not, your competition likely is and your business is falling behind.

Everyone has expertise in different areas. We don’t try to navigate the world of payroll taxes on our own.  If we have a broken bone, we go to the hospital and get help from skilled medical professionals. We seek the expertise of those who specialize in these areas.  In reality, from time to time you see you will see the sign below:

Realtors will groan at the sight of this sign and quickly site statistics stating that FSBO sales underperform sales made using licensed realtors. Some of our readers may attempt a FSBO home sale but many of you would prefer the expertise of a licensed realtor to ensure the valuation is proper and that the most potential customers are reached.

Technology is an area that can make a real difference in the success or failure of a business, yet far too many FSBO their technology needs.  At Colden Company, our staff has many years of expertise, continuing education, and experience implementing technology solutions.  We are certified experts in our field. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Are you aligned with a technology company that knows your business?
  • Is your business taking proper advantage of the available technology?
  • Is your business operating the same way it was three or four years ago?
