How Malicious Actors Are Using Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence has rapidly transformed business operations—but it has just as quickly become a powerful weapon in the hands of cybercriminals. As organizations adopt AI to improve efficiency and decision‑making, threat actors are leveraging the same technologies to scale attacks, evade detection, and exploit human vulnerabilities at unprecedented speed.

One of the most alarming developments is the rise of autonomous AI‑driven cyberattacks. According to the World Economic Forum, cybercriminals are now deploying AI agents capable of thinking, learning, and adapting faster than humans, amplifying threats such as phishing, identity theft, and zero‑day exploitation. Industry predictions further warn that by 2026, AI‑driven attacks may dominate over half of the threat landscape, with self-directed systems modifying payloads and evolving tactics in real time.

AI‑enhanced social engineering has also surged. Attackers use generative AI to craft highly personalized phishing emails and text messages that mimic natural communication styles, dramatically increasing victim click‑through rates. Verizon’s 2025 Data Breach Investigations Report notes that AI‑assisted malicious emails have already doubled over a two-year period—evidence of how quickly adversaries are weaponizing these tools.

Deepfake‑based fraud represents another fast‑growing threat. Using AI-generated audio and video, criminals can convincingly impersonate executives to authorize fraudulent wire transfers or request sensitive data. One incident cited by legal analysts involved attackers using deepfakes of a company’s CFO and staff to steal $25.6 million—highlighting both the sophistication and financial stakes of AI‑enabled deception.

Beyond social engineering, AI is empowering more aggressive intrusions. IBM forecasts that autonomous AI bots will increasingly exfiltrate data at machine speed, often without leaving clear forensic traces. Businesses may know data was exposed but be unable to determine which AI agent moved it or why. AI is also straining identity systems, with deepfake and biometric spoofing attacks outpacing traditional authentication controls.

As AI continues to advance, businesses must assume that attackers will use it just as quickly—and sometimes more effectively—than defenders. Building resilience requires not only upgrading technical defenses but also implementing AI‑specific governance, identity protections, and continuous monitoring designed for this new generation of threats.
